As with attacks the defense should be made according to the opponent strength and war troops.
Opponent war troops can be seen by looking at the individual players profile.
So for a Town Hall 8 like Lotte , you should look at opponents Town Hall 8-9 as they are most likely to target you in the war.
As most people find it a bit time consuming to look trough all opponents in all wars, here are some guidelines for Town Hall 9.
Town Hall 9 - defense concept
At Town Hall 9 you have a medium level of defense compared to attack strength from Town Hall 9-10 which are the expected opponents.
Needless to say it is important to get your defense upgraded as quick as possible, however the mentioned towers below should be a priority.
Hog Attack
All hogs is a common attack strategy against newly udgraded/underdeveloped Town Hall 9.
The only real defense against Hog attacks against new Town Hall 9 is double giant bombs, skeleton bombs, Barbarian King, Archer Queen and Wizard towers that can eat through a pack of hogs.
It is important to place the double giant bomb where it cannot be triggered by a single hog rider.
Be sure to have a centralized Clan Castle, Archer Queen and Barb King, they can really hurt a pack of hogs even at max lvl.
As your base gets upgraded wizard towers becomes increasingly importat as do x-bows.
Lavaloonion/Balloonion attack
An increasingly common attack combo against Town Hall 9 is maxed balloons, minions and sometimes Lava Hounds.
Your only chance to survive an Lavaloonion/Balloonion attack is to get your Air Defense (Archer Towers, Hidden Tesla, Wizard Towers, x-bows and Air Defense) as close to center as possible.
Another factor to use in defense is space as the flight time of balloons is long. So space will eat up the time to destroy your base for 3 stars.
It is also a very good idea to combine Air Defense and Wizard Tower with the Wizard Tower behind the Air Defense as the Air Defense has a high hit point so the Wizard Tower have time to eat through a pack of Balloons.
One might consider if the skeletons should be set to "Air"
GoWiPe/GoWiWi attack
Golem, Wizard and Pekka/Witch attacks are the most common high level attack against both Town Hall 9 and 10.
For a Town Hall 9 it is very difficult to defend against a GoWiPe/Wi attack but there is some design that can increase your chance of a successfull defense (= 1-2 stars).
One common design concept is to divert the Golems to one or two sides and at the same time leading the wizards up the center.
By doing so the Golems will no longer be shielding the wizards and as the wizards are taken out the Golem no longer pose a threat due to their low attack damage.
For Pekkas and witches the key is Hidden Teslas and Wizard Towers respectively. Both to be upgraded to at least lvl 7.
One common design for Anti-GoWiPe/Wi is a Southern Tease where the opponent is tricked to attack from a seemingly weak direction, only to see Golems go in one direction and the rest in another direction.
Here is an example which also defends well against balloons and hogs.
Another example however more risky towards other types of attacks.
