When preparing for war its important to update war bases according to expected attacks.

As with attacks the defense should be made according to the opponent strength and war troops.

Opponent war troops can be seen by looking at the individual players profile.

So for a Town Hall 8 like Lotte , you should look at opponents Town Hall 8-9 as they are most likely to target you in the war.

As most people find it a bit time consuming to look trough all opponents in all wars, here are some guidelines for Town Hall 8.

Town Hall 8 - defense concept

At Town Hall 8 you have fair high level of defense compared to attack strength from other Town Hall 8 and even Town Hall 9.

Needless to say it is important to get your defense upgraded as quick as possible, however the mentioned towers below should be a priority.

Dragon attack

The most common attack combo against Town Hall 8 is all dragons at level 3.

Your only chance to survive an all dragon attack is to get your Air Defense (Archer Towers, Hidden Tesla, Wizard Towers and Air Defense) as close to center as possible.

At the same time your Clan Castle suddenly doesn't work - actually in the contrary. A centralized Clan Castle can attract dragons and help them to destroy your Town Hall as the dragons will engage the CC troops when spotted before attacking buildings.

Another factor to use in defense is space as the flight time of dragons is long. So space will eat up the time to destroy your base for 3 stars.

Around your center with your combined Air defense its a good idea to have building with high Hit Points as the dragons will spend time destroying them while being shot down by your defense.

Hog Attack

All hogs  is another very common attack strategy for Town Hall 8.

The only real defense against Hog attacks at Town Hall 8 is double giant bombs, skeleton bombs, Barbarian King and Wizard towers that can eat through a pack of hogs.

It is important to place the double giant bomb where it cannot be triggered by a single hog rider.

In contrast to dragon attacks a centralized Clan Castle and Barb King can really hurt a pack of hogs even at max lvl.

So to combine it all here is Lotte's base, successfully defending for only two stars in war with an all dragon attack including a lvl 4 dragon from Clan Castle.

Notice that I have chosen to centralize the Clan Castle as a compromise. One could argue to swap 1-2 mortars with wizard towers.
